Building a Cross-Chain DeFi Platform on Neo

June 1, 2024

A deep dive into building and scaling a decentralized finance (DeFi) frontend for cross-chain trading, liquidity, and governance on the Neo blockchain.

Overview

Flamingo Finance is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol built on the Neo blockchain, designed to provide a unified platform for cross-chain asset management, token swaps, liquidity provision, staking, and governance.

The platform enables users to bridge assets from multiple blockchains into the Neo ecosystem, trade them via an AMM-based DEX, earn yield through liquidity pools, and participate in protocol governance using the FLM token.

I joined the project as a Frontend Developer, contributing to the core web application used by thousands of DeFi users. My focus was on building performant, reliable, and user-friendly interfaces that abstract complex blockchain interactions into intuitive workflows.

Key Features

  • DeFi Web Application: Worked on the main Flamingo Finance web app, implementing user interfaces for token swaps, liquidity pools, staking, and portfolio views. Ensured a smooth user experience despite the underlying complexity of on-chain interactions.
  • Advanced Charting & Market Visualization: Implemented complex, interactive financial charts using TradingView-style charting solutions and custom chart components. This included candlestick (OHLC) charts, volume overlays, price indicators and time-range selectors, and responsive chart layouts optimized for different screen sizes. The charts consumed real-time and historical market data to give users clear insights into price movements and liquidity.
  • Wallet & Blockchain Integration: Integrated frontend flows with Neo wallets (e.g., NeoLine, O3), handling wallet connections, transaction signing, network state, and error handling to provide clear feedback during blockchain operations.
  • AMM & Liquidity Pool UI: Built and maintained interfaces for AMM-based trading and liquidity provisioning, including pool selection, token pair inputs, slippage handling, and transaction confirmations.
  • Data-Driven DeFi Dashboards: Implemented real-time and near-real-time data views for balances, rewards, APRs, and pool statistics by consuming blockchain data and backend APIs.
  • Performance & UX Optimization: Focused on minimizing unnecessary re-renders, improving perceived performance, and ensuring the application remained responsive even during periods of high on-chain activity.

Technologies Used

  • React & TypeScript: Core frontend stack for building type-safe, reusable UI components.
  • TradingView & Custom Charting Libraries: For advanced market charts, indicators, and interactive trading views.
  • Neo Blockchain (N3): Integration with Neo smart contracts and on-chain data.
  • Web3 Wallet APIs: For wallet connection, transaction signing, and account state management.
  • REST, WebSocket & Blockchain RPC APIs: For real-time and historical market data.
  • Modern Frontend Tooling: Custom hooks, shared chart abstractions, and component-driven architecture.

Challenges and Learnings

One of the main challenges was implementing high-performance financial charts that remain responsive while processing frequent data updates. This required careful coordination between data fetching, buffering, and rendering to avoid UI freezes or visual jitter.

Another challenge was aligning chart data with on-chain state, ensuring that prices, liquidity, and transaction outcomes were reflected accurately and consistently across charts, trade panels, and user balances.

Through this work, I gained hands-on experience with TradingView-style charting systems, real-time data visualization in DeFi applications, performance optimization for data-heavy UIs, and UX patterns for professional trading interfaces.

Outcome

The result was a production-ready DeFi frontend powering Flamingo Finance’s core user experience. The platform successfully enabled users to swap and manage assets across chains, provide liquidity and earn yield, and interact with smart contracts through a clean, accessible UI.

This project strengthened my experience in building real-world Web3 and DeFi frontends, integrating blockchain wallets and smart contracts, designing UX for complex financial systems, and maintaining performance and reliability in decentralized applications.
